Success for Every Student
A word map (Schwartz, 1988; Schwartz & Raphael, 1985) is exactly what it sounds like: a map that helps fit the word into prior knowledge to create a context for the word that makes sense. A word map usually has the vocabulary word in the middle of the template, a user-friendly definition, three items that are similar to the word, and three examples of the word (see Figure 11.1).
